Leonard Cohen
Leonard Cohen was one of the most influential songwriters of the 20th century, revered for his ability to give voice to the universal aspects of human existence. His work explores love and desire, politics and justice, and the spiritual longing at the heart of the human condition. His songs are intimate and epic, bridging personal reflection with global resonance.
Emerging during the folk revival of the 1960s, Cohen’s songwriting redefined what folk music could carry: not only melodies and stories, but layered poetic meaning. Songs such as Suzanne, Bird on the Wire, and Hallelujah have become part of the global cultural fabric, covered by countless artists and performed worldwide.
This project honors Leonard Cohen not simply as a musician, but as a cultural figure whose work embodies the intersection of music, poetry, and philosophy. Presenting his music as a guitar/vocal trio allows audiences to experience his artistry with intimacy while underscoring the enduring relevance of the music and, in particular, the lyrics.
The Musicians
Little Wild Bouquet has performed at many locations throughout the Pioneer Valley, including the Full Moon Cafe, the Easthampton Senior Center, Energy Park, Luthier’s Coop, and the Pioneer Valley Folklore Society. Audience members have expressed enthusiastic appreciation for their interpretations of Leonard Cohen’s songs. Cohen’s central message – that life is noble and sacred even with its flaws, and that healing is always present in the face of suffering – is expressed eloquently in his song Anthem: “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” This is the source of our inspiration to create the How the Light Gets In program. We are able to combine this program with songs from our broader repertoire of cover songs or originals if requested.
